Nightclub death accused on manslaughter charge

A 34-year-old has appeared in court charged with manslaughter following the death of a man in Portrush at the weekend.

Muredach Martin Doherty (34), from Station Road, Portstewart, appeared before Antrim Magistrates Court yesterday.

During his time in court the accused made no reply to the charge of manslaughter.

His alleged victim, 48-year-old father-of-three Colin McLeister from Coleraine, was found dead at the bottom of the stairs at The Playhouse entertainment complex in the Co Antrim town in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A post-mortem has since been carried out and the results now form part of a police investigation, but have not been released.

Earlier this week tributes were paid to the man described by friends as a “gentle giant”.

Words of sympathy to his family were posted on Facebook.

The management and staff of the hotel where he had once worked as a bouncer offered their “sincere sympathies to the family of our late former colleague”.

“We are all saddened at Colin's sudden death and are thinking of Colin's children at this very difficult time,” the message added.
