A viable pipe bomb type device has been found during a security alert in north Belfast.

It was sparked following the discovery of a suspicious object in the Clifton Crescent area.

Army bomb experts were sent to the scene.

Clifton Crescent was closed to traffic and a number of houses were evacuated.

The alert has now ended.

Inspector James Murphy said: "This has been declared as a viable pipe bomb type device and has been taken away for further examination.

"All roads have now reopened and any residents are now able to return to their homes."
