A rider at the North West 200 has been airlifted to hospital in Belfast following an incident in the Superbike qualifying.

The BBC has reported Event director Mervyn Whyte saying the rider, who has not been named, had sustained "some injuries" in the crash.

It is understood a second rider was involved in the incident at the University Corner section.

Practice was delayed for 45 minutes after the incident and a further red flag then led to Supertwins practice being stopped.

Mr Whyte said: "Unfortunately one of the competitors came off the bike and as a result we had a red flag situation.

"We have airlifted the competitor to hospital in Belfast with some injuries. There are no further details at the present time."

The rider is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
