Northern Ireland airports 'excellent' for disabled

By Claire McNeilly

Northern Ireland's three commercial airports have been recognised as being among the best in the UK when it comes to aiding disabled passengers.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ranked Belfast International Airport, George Best Belfast City Airport and City of Derry Airport among the top 10 throughout the 12 months from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016.

All three were listed as providing very good standards in a new airport disabled service standards review the CAA aims to publish annually.

Only seven other airports, among a total of 30 UK airports handling more than 150,000 passengers during the 12 months, achieved the same ranking in the Accessible air travel: Airport performance report 2015/16, which was published this week.

"Providing the best possible assistance to all our passengers, including those with mobility restrictions, is of the utmost importance to Belfast City Airport," said Mark Beattie, director of operations at George Best Belfast City Airport.

"We are particularly pleased that our passenger surveys have revealed a high level of satisfaction with our product and services."

A spokesman for Belfast International Airport said the ranking reflected the hard work undertaken in this domain.

"We pride ourselves in giving a consistently high standard of service and are particularly pleased that the CAA has rated Belfast International Airport as very good in relation to the special assistance service it provides to those passengers with reduced mobility," he said.

"We have worked extremely hard over the last number of years to drive improvements in this service and have been working with a number of agencies to make sure we get it right and that passengers requiring special assistance have a seamless journey through the airport."

No other UK region's airports achieved similar consistency in disability service excellence as Northern Ireland's three airports.

The largest airport awarded a CAA Very Good ranking was Manchester Airport, the UK's third-busiest airport in 2015.
