The council with the worst record of employee sick leave in Northern Ireland has said it is disappointed at the news, but is tackling the problem.

At nearly 15 days a year, sick leave rates in NI councils are the worst in the UK - and Newry, Mourne and Down has the worst record, at 17.1 days.

A council spokesman said tackling the issue "remains a priority" and that it is "disappointing" to note it recorded the highest rate of sickness absence days "albeit that was a slight reduction on the previous year".

The spokesman added: "The council continues to work with the recognised trade unions to agree revised management attendance procedures aimed at achieving improved management of sickness absence.

"Council management has focused on absenteeism in the past year, which is expected to realise a further reduction in absenteeism for 2018-2019.

"Wellness initiatives for council staff are in place to improve the health and wellbeing of employees and remain a corporate priority for the council."
