Northern Ireland heart consultant is honoured by the Queen

By Staff Reporter

A veteran cardiologist who treated patients at the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen received his OBE from the Queen during a presentation at Buckingham Palace yesterday.

Professor Mahendra Varma (74), who is chairman of Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stoke (NICHS), attended the palace yesterday with his wife after being named in the Queen's birthday honours list in June for services to healthcare in Northern Ireland.

Professor Varma had a 41 year career and was a consultant cardiologist at the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen from 1981 until he retired last December.

He has been involved with the NICHS since 1984.

Since 1984 he has been chairman of the Fermanagh support branch of NICHS and has been a member of council of the NICHS since 1985.

Professor Varma was born and raised in South Africa, of Indian origin, before attending The Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. He went on to train in Belfast, Dublin and New York before moving to work at the Erne Hospital in 1982.
