Northern Ireland man 'abused ex-partner's young niece'

By Alan Erwin

A County Antrim man is to stand trial accused of sexually abusing his ex-partner's young niece, a judge has ordered.

The man allegedly assaulted the girl and made her view indecent images when she was as young as five.

The 34-year-old defendant, who cannot be named to protect the girl's identity, appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday for a preliminary inquiry hearing.

He is charged with two sexual assaults and three counts of intentionally causing the child to look at images of a person engaging in sexual activity.

The alleged offences were committed on dates between October 2012 and April 2014.

During proceedings defence lawyers did not contest prosecution submissions that their client has a case to answer.

Granting an application to have the man returned for a future Crown Court trial, a deputy district judge released him on continuing bail.

The accused is set to be represented by two counsel due to the complexities of the case.
