Legal history has been made in Londonderry after a local man was charged with raping a woman in Spain four-and-a-half years ago.

The defendant is 44-year-old Michael Joseph Cregan, from Ferguson Street in Derry.

He's charged that on August 10, 2014, he raped a woman in the Hotel Los Alamos in Torremolinos, Malaga.

Defence barrister Sean Doherty told District Judge Barney McElholm at Derry Magistrates Court yesterday that it was the first time a prosecution of this type had ever come before the courts in Northern Ireland under amended legislation.

The District Judge said he was content to let the preliminary hearing into the case proceed.

During the hearing, a Public Prosecution Service solicitor submitted that the defendant had a prima facie case to answer.

The defendant replied "no" when asked if he had anything to say in answer to the charge.

He was released on his own bail of £500 with conditions attached.

He is due to appear before the local Crown Court on March 12.
