By Adrian Rutherford

A man has been convicted of claiming nearly £12,000 in benefits he was not entitled to.

Victoras Smirnovas appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court yesterday.

The 33-year-old, of Alderley Place, Newtownabbey, claimed Jobseeker's Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £11,973 while failing to declare living with a partner. He was given a four month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

Separately, the department's financial investigation unit has obtained a confiscation order against a Ballymoney man.

Gary Cunningham (43) claimed Income Support on the basis that he was a carer and was unavailable for work.

He failed to declare that he held capital in excess of the statutory limits. He received £16,168.65 in benefits he was not entitled to over five years.

The defendant previously pleaded guilty to two charges of dishonesty. A confiscation order for £12,983.85 was granted.
