A Northern Ireland man who went on the run accused of a serious assault nearly three years ago has been remanded into custody after having been extradited from the Republic.

Evan Walsh (22), whose current address is listed as unknown, appeared at Armagh Magistrates Court yesterday on foot of a European Arrest warrant.

He faces two bills of indictment, accusing him of inflicting grievous bodily harm on a male in September 2016 and a second set of charges accusing him of two counts of criminal damage, resisting police and assault on police in November 2016.

Refusing to free Walsh, Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne yesterday said he had "no confidence" he would turn up for future court appearances after hearing a bench warrant had been outstanding since January 2017.

Judge Browne remanded Walsh into custody to appear again on July 24.
