Northern Ireland security alert sparked by BB gun

A suspected firearm which sparked a security alert close to scene of the fatal shooting of ex-UDA chief Geordie Gilmore turned out to be a BB gun.

The item was found in The Hollies area of Carrickfergus at around 5.30pm on Wednesday and Army bomb squad experts sent to the scene.

The BB gun was then taken away to be destroyed.

Police said there were no further details.
