Northern Ireland's chip shops battle for national title

By Maureen Coleman

Northern Ireland's top six fish and chip shops are hoping to prove they're the catch of the day in the ultimate battle of the batters.

The local shops are in the race to be crowned regional Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year at the 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish, the authority on seafood.

The chippies, part of the top 60 shortlisted across the UK, will compete against each other to become Northern Ireland's regional winner, placing them in competition to bag the ultimate title. The UK champion will be announced in London next January.

The shortlisted shops in Northern Ireland are: The Dolphin Takeaway, Dungannon, Co Tyrone; FishCity, Ballynahinch, Co Down; Darren Raffo, Belfast, The Chippy, Antrim, and Scoff's on Belfast's Blacks Road.

Each shop was judged by industry experts and visited by a mystery diner. The shops were all assessed on criteria which included product quality, sustainable sourcing, marketing and customer service.
