Northern Irish artists scoop £15,000 awards
The Arts Council has bestowed its highest honour onto four Northern Irish artists.
The Major Individual Awards are worth £15,000 each and are awarded for contributions to creative life in Northern Ireland.
Recipients this year are composer Professor Piers Hellawell, playwright Shannon Sickels (Yee), performance artist Sinead O’Donnell and visual artist Mairead McClean.
The artists will use the money to develop new works.
Chief executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Roisin McDonough said: “Congratulations to these four immensely talented artists who have already made an enormous contribution to the arts in Northern Ireland.
"Each will benefit greatly from being able to take time out to concentrate purely on innovative new projects with the financial backing they need to produce work of lasting value.
"This award will help to cement their national and international reputations as artists, and strengthen the positive cultural profile of Northern Ireland both at home and abroad."
Previous winners of the prize include:
Pianist Michael McHale
Jazz drummer David Lyttle
Choreographer Oona Doherty
