Northern Irish gyrocopter daredevil lands in Malaysia
The Northern Irish daredevil attempting to circumnavigate the globe in a gyrocopter has landed in Malaysia.
Norman Surplus (47) from Larne flew into the 15th country on his epic 7,000-mile journey round the world in his own ‘Little Nellie’ — the tiny aircraft made famous in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
The father-of-two had been stalled in Thailand for 13 weeks after high winds forced him to ditch the gyrocopter into a lake.
But last night his blog confirmed Mr Surplus had “arrived safely” in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.
“He was met mid-air by members of the Malaysian EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) in some of their aircraft,” a spokesman said. Norman, who survived bowel cancer in 2003, set off on his ambitious adventure on March 22. Since then he has flown through more than a dozen countries. Russia is his next stop.
