Obama 'will visit Northern Ireland if re-elected'

By Jim Dee

US President Barack Obama could be coming to Northern Ireland — if he wins re-election in November, First Minister Peter Robinson has said.

“He was given an invitation to come to Northern Ireland — and I'd be pretty sure that, if he's successful in November, we'll get him in the next term,” Mr Robinson told the Belfast Telegraph. The DUP leader was speaking after he and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness met the US President in the White House yesterday.

Mr Robinson said that, during the meeting, President Obama had displayed a high level of knowledge about Northern Ireland and peace process developments.

“I think he recognises that every now and again there will be isolated outrages, but that the strength of the process is now unbreakable,” added Mr McGuinness.

The pair met President Obama on the second day of a two-day Washington visit.
