Object at centre of Newtownabbey security alert removed for investigation

Police have said the object at the centre of a security alert in Newtownabbey has been removed for further investigation.

Homes were evacuated in the Mayfield Village area on Thursday afternoon and the Army bomb squad sent to the scene.

Inspector Peter Duncan said: "An object was located and has been taken away for further examination.

“I want to thank local people and the wider community for their patience and understanding throughout the operation, which was necessary to ensure the safety of local residents, and those travelling in and around the area.

“I would appeal for anyone with information about this incident, or who saw any unusual activity in the area to contact police on the non-emergency 101, quoting reference 382 of 07/09/17. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously through the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

SDLP Councillor Noreen McClelland has condemned the security alert in Mayfield Village and said "it has resulted in significant disruption residents and families who were evacuated."

The Glengormley representative stated: "The last thing anyone here needs is to be forced from their home in the middle of the day.

"I will continue to liaise with local police and residents to ensure the area is made safe as soon as possible and people can return to their homes."
