Sinn Féin member Niall Ó Donnghaile has been selected to contest both the Assembly and Belfast City Council elections next year.
Mr O’Donnghaile was elected unopposed by local party activists and his name will now go to the party's Ard Chomhairle for ratification.
“Having grown up in the Short Strand I am aware of the many problems facing the people of East Belfast.
“We will be building upon the 2009 European election result which saw Sinn Féin become the largest political party in the North for the first time since the creation of state.
“I for one am looking forward to this challenge, as I know are our team of dedicated Republican activists throughout the area,” he added.
