Off-course turtle 'Columba' loses fight for life

By Linda Stewart

The young loggerhead turtle that was rescued by Exploris Aquarium after being washed up on a Donegal beach has lost its battle for life.

Twelve-year-old Columba was found in a lethargic state at Glencolmcille on Saturday after travelling hundreds of miles off course into waters of only 8C. Tania Singleton of Exploris said last night it had been moving in and out of a lethargy ever since arriving on Sunday afternoon.

"When we left him we were quite happy," she said.

"We were spending a lot of time in the tank with him and he was going into and out of periods of lethargy, but he became reasonably active again," she said.

"But when we came in this morning he was dead.

"I'm pretty sure there was something more going on with him than just lethargy from the cold. The turtle is going in for post -mortem and that will take a few days to come back."
