Officers hurt in disturbances

Two police officers in north Belfast have suffered cuts and bruising to their faces and hands after being attacked by a crowd.

They were surrounded during disturbances on the Ballysillan Road on Monday afternoon.

Two other officers were injured but did not require hospital treatment. CS spray was used by police during the incident.

Three men have been arrested.

The officers were surrounded as they spoke to three men they had stopped during a patrol.

SDLP Councillor Alban Maginness said: “It is deplorable that police officers were injured in this incident but it is important that police took action.

“I would condemn this attack but police should be commended for their actions.”

North Belfast DUP MP Nigel Dodds said: “It is an extremely worrying incident.

“It is something that does not normally happen on the Ballysillan Road and it is concerning when police officers are injured as a result of a confrontation. Local people do not want to see this type of incident,” the local MP added.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact detectives in north Belfast on 0845 600 8000.

Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.
