Oggie in the running for a marathon record

By Staff Reporter

An inspirational Co Londonderry runner is on course to break a world record for being the oldest person to complete the most marathons in under four hours.

Portstewart's Eugene 'Oggie' Winters (60) has set himself a new year's resolution that would make endurance runners half his age run away from the challenge.

Mr Winters ran the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon in 2012 aged 55, his first ever marathon.

He quickly caught the running bug and the motivation to set goals and Oggie, as he is known in the marathon world, has beaten every one of them.

Last year he celebrated completing 300 marathons in just 270 weeks at the age of 60.

His target was to complete this in 300 weeks.

He hasn't stopped there - Oggie is currently on track to set the world record for the oldest person (60+) to finish the most marathons in a sub four-hour time.

His enthusiasm and dedication are palpable and there's no stopping him. His latest goal is to have completed 100 marathons in 52 weeks by next Monday.

Having chosen Belfast as his first ever marathon, Oggie is a massive supporter of the event and is encouraging people to sign up now for this year's run.

"I love the Belfast City Marathon and it's one I will never forget as it was my first marathon," he said.

"I hope that my story helps others to get out and run. After all, age is just a number!"

Close to 17,000 participants are expected to set off from Belfast City Hall on Monday, May 7.

As well as the marathon run, there is also a wheelchair race, marathon team relay, eight mile walk and fun run.

You can sign up at or contact the office directly on 028 9060 5933.
