Omagh mother's anguish over vulnerable missing son (35)

By Joanne Sweeney

The mother of a missing Omagh man has spoken of her unrelenting anguish since she last saw her son.

Fears for the wellbeing of 35-year-old Shane Sharkey - who is a vulnerable adult - are increasing as he has now been missing for 16 days.

Last night Eithne Sharkey told the Belfast Telegraph that she and her family were "massively worried" over the safety of her eldest son.

"I get up every day and think that he's still out there, living somewhere," said Mrs Sharkey.

"But then, when night-time comes, I think, no, he's lying somewhere and something's happened to him," said the 58-year-old.

Mr Sharkey, who has brown curly hair and is 5ft 9install, was last seen walking along the Dublin Road heading out of Omagh on Thursday, September 4 around 10.30am.

She pleaded for help from the public in locating him and said: "I just want to know he's OK, to say to him just to please get in touch or ask someone else to let us know where you are."

The widowed mother-of-three revealed that her son did not own a mobile phone so his family cannot contact him.

She added: "We know that he took £300 out of his bank account a few days before he left. I'm really worried at how's he's managing without much money or his medication."

Mrs Sharkey, who is ill at the moment, said that her eldest son was "a very quiet-natured fella who loves his music and books and who keeps himself to himself".

She said that she last saw Shane on a Sunday four weeks ago.

"Normally I would always make a big Sunday dinner but that day I just wasn't well and wasn't up for it," she said. "I know someone who visited him the Friday before we think he left and he was in good form.

"But Shane has no phone, so I didn't get to speak to him again, which really upsets me. We just want to know that he's all right."

Mrs Sharkey praised the efforts of the PSNI in trying to locate Shane and supporting her and her two other sons, Darren (32) and Owen (30), during the family's ordeal.

Police issued an appeal for information on the whereabouts of Shane Sharkey (35). He was last seen on September 4 at 10.30am walking along the Dublin Road area of Omagh. He is 5ft 9ins tall, with light to medium brown curly hair and is of thin build. Police have appealed to Mr Sharkey or anyone who has seen him to contact them on the 101 number.
