Girls’ glee comes to Belfast

A unique new musical mash-up will be launched in Belfast next month, and auditions will soon be under foot.

Loughside Girls’ Choir & Glee Club will combine classical choral singing with an American-style show choir repertoire, made popular by the hit TV series, Glee.

The event hopes to attract teenagers with a range of music and dance backgrounds and the target age range for the girls' group, is 12-16 years.

Rehearsals will be on Monday evenings, from 6.30 pm until 7.45 pm in the university area of Belfast

Fun day of titanic proportion

A Titanic Day of Fun and Living History is to be had for everyone at the Titanic Vintage Day 2010.

Once again the Titanic Vintage Day invites you and your family to experience and enjoy a celebration of Northern Ireland’s history and heritage.

Taking place on Saturday, August 14, from 10am to 4pm at the Titanic’s Dock & Pump-House, visitors will be able to view and admire vintage and classic cars from car clubs all over Northern Ireland with the The Morris Minor Owners Club NI's Regional Rally on the day.

Browse and buy at the Vintage Fair which will be showcasing the best NI has to offer from suppliers of Antiques, Vintage Clothes, Jewellery, Vanity Ware, Models, Records, Cards and much more.

The fair will once again take place in the Studio Room of the Pump House, which showcases treasures dating from the early 1900s to the 1970s, and discover the story behind Belfast’s maritime magic by taking a guided tour of the Pump-House and Dock.

Bouncy castles and face painting will provide some added fun and entertainment for the kids and Living History and Boat tours mean there is something for everyone at this year’s Titanic Vintage Day.

Organisers are encouraging visitors to dress for the occasion with prizes to be won for best dressed couple, best dressed boy and best dressed girl.

Community education

Enrollment has begun for a variety of 15 week long courses to be taught at Wandsworth Community Centre — all commencing on the week beginning September 13.

The courses and times, offered through the Belfast Metropolitan College, are:

Creative writing — Monday, 10am - 12noon;

Creative needle work — Wednesday, 10am-12noon or Thursday, 10am-12 noon;

Painting for pleasure — Thursday, 10am-12noon or 1pm-3pm; Flower arranging — 10am - 12 noon.

The cost to take part in a 15 week long course is £75. For those on benefits, the cost is £60. To book your place on a course call 90 265 265.

Fundraising ball

East Belfast Mission will be holding a fundraising ball on Friday, September 10, at 7pm in the Stormont Hotel.

Tickets are £40, and included in the price is a four course meal, music and entertainment.

Technique Dance School would like to thank people of east Belfast for contributing to their door to door collection.

A total of £750 was made which will be going towards costs to cover their attendance at the next Dance Championship in Letterkenny.

Family fun afternoon

There will be a “Family Fun Afternoon" on Sunday August 15, froom 12noon to 4pm to celebrate one year in business at Playtime Cafe at Connswater Retail Park.

This is open to everyone tickets are £5 per child and this includes, play in Playtime, bouncy castle, Mad Professor Science Show and admission into our family craft fair.

Summer fun

Cregagh Community Association is holding its biggest fun day of the summer on Saturday, August 21.

The Green will be a hive of activity from noon-4pm with lots of attractions from bouncy castles to tasty treats. Everyone is welcome.


Bedding down for the winter ahead

Castlereagh Borough Council is encouraging householders to plan ahead for the cold winter months by offering free electrical testing on all electric blankets during a special home safety roadshow on Thursday September 30.

The roadshow will take place at the Council Civic Centre from 10am to 4pm and will offer householders the opportunity to obtain a free safety check on their electric blanket as well as discover practical safety tips and advice on doorstep crime, accidents at home, fire safety and home security.
