A man aged in his 20s was in a critical but stable condition last night after being discovered with a head injury on a Co Tyrone street.

Another male, in his 30s, was arrested after the injured man was found lying on the footpath where Chapel Street meets Loy Street in Cookstown in the early hours of yesterday. He has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

A PSNI detective sergeant said: "Police attended the scene and officers administered advance first aid prior to the arrival of the NI Ambulance Service who subsequently transferred the man to hospital.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who believes they may have seen the victim prior to when he was discovered injured."

Cookstown UUP councillor Trevor Wilson said: "This is a terrible tragedy and my thoughts are with all of those involved. I hope that the injured party makes a speedy recovery."

SDLP councillor Kerri Hughes added: "I will be thinking of the gentleman and I hope he makes a speedy recovery."
