Only 10 fines for illegal cycle lane parking
Ten motorists have been fined for illegally parking in Northern Ireland's cycle lanes in the past 12 months, new figures show.
It comes after cyclists complained on Twitter of the separated cycle lane on Sydenham Road being blocked by parked cars as the Halloween Monster Mash event was held in Titanic Quarter last weekend, saying it was not being enforced properly by Belfast Harbour Police.
Responding to an Assembly question, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said that 10 penalty charge notices (PCNs) were issued to motorists for blocking mandatory lanes in the past 12 months.
Green Party spokesperson Ross Brown said: "With only 10 fines issued in the last 12 months to motorists, the Government's statistics signal that not enough is being done to prevent illegal parking in cycling lanes in Northern Ireland."
