Overcoming Cambridge a piece of cake for Queen's team
Taking on one of the UK's most prestigious university's on one of TV's oldest quiz shows was never a gamble for one local student – as he even had time to wow host Jeremy Paxman.
Gareth Gamble, a final year medical student at Queen's University, was the driving force behind a team representing the University on this year's BBC2 show University Challenge on Monday evening.
The team eased in to quarter finals of the quiz show defeating Downing College, Cambridge by almost 80 points – answering questions on a range of subjects from literature to geography and even Victoria Sponge.
When asked to "identify a recipe taken from the Delia Smith Book of Cakes", Gamble's answer of Victoria Sponge cake, had the usually unflappable quiz host exclaiming: "How did you know that?".
"I really enjoyed the challenge of competing on TV's toughest quiz." said Gamble.
"University Challenge is a quiz show which I have watched for many years and played along with at home and it was an honour to be selected to represent Queen's.
"It was a surreal experience being in the studio, with Jeremy Paxman asking the questions and hearing 'Queen's University, Gamble' whenever the buzzer was pressed. It was a fantastic experience and I would strongly encourage students to apply to be on the team for next year."
The team which ran out eventual winners by 210 to 135 points consisted of captain Joseph Greenwood (captain) from Manchester, Suzanne Cobain from Bangor, Gareth Gamble from Lurgan, Alexander Green from Lytham and Jonathan Malone (reserve).
Over 80 students applied to get on the team, which then had to battle with 130 other universities from across the UK to be one of the 28 teams to appear on TV.
"Appearing on University Challenge was an amazing and slightly surreal experience." said captain Joseph Greenwood.
"It's probably the one programme I had wanted to appear on since childhood, so to get there was great. I would recommend it to anyone of a quizzical nature. It certainly lives up to its name, but it's also great fun."
Queen's last won the notoriously tough quiz show back in 1981 and will now appear in the quarter finals after Christmas.
