Pair accused of rampage through town in stolen car

By Staff Reporter

Two Newry men have appeared in court on charges following a hijacking incident in Banbridge, Co Down, during which a woman was dragged from her car which was then driven off, causing what police described as "pandemonium".

Shortly after 6pm on January 24 it was reported that two men had hauled a woman from her car, which they then took on a rampage through the town, crashing into several other vehicles, including one in which a pregnant woman was a passenger.

In the dock yesterday at Armagh Magistrates Court were Stephen McGrath (33), of Ardcarn Park, and Dominic McGrath (26), of Iveagh Crescent, who are jointly charged with hijacking a Toyota Corolla, as well as aggravated vehicle taking causing damage to two other cars, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, dangerous driving and assaulting police.

The pair are also jointly accused of stealing a charity box belonging to Alzheimer's NI from a location in Banbridge prior to the motoring offences.

An officer familiar with the facts of the case told the court yesterday that all the charges could be connected.

There was no application for bail and both men were remanded in custody to appear by video-link at Banbridge Magistrates Court, sitting in Newry, next month.
