Pair deny attempting to kill man in house

By John Cassidy

Two members of the Travelling community have denied trying to kill another man last year as part of an alleged family feud.

In the dock at Belfast Crown Court for their arraignment hearing were William Mongan (29), of Bleach Green, Belfast, and Thomas Gerard McDonagh, also known as Thomas Gerard Mongan (27), of Valleyside Close, Edenderry, Belfast.

Both accused denied the attempted murder of Martin Heaney on September 8, 2013 at a house in Ardoyne, north Belfast.

The pair further denied a second charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding Martin Heaney with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

No details of the case were given at the brief arraignment hearing.

At a High Court bail hearing in March this year, a prosecution lawyer said it was the Crown case that Mr Heaney was attacked in his home with a Samurai sword and a knife. Both defendants were remanded back into custody.
