A man who discovered a suspicious object in north Belfast yesterday put it down a manhole before he alerted the police.

The alert led to a number of families in the New Lodge being moved from their homes before the device was declared a hoax by Army bomb experts.

The alert began after a man spotted a suspicious object in Lepper Street. He put it down the manhole and called the PSNI.

A police spokesperson said the pipe bomb-style device was taken away for further examination.

Lepper Street reopened to traffic shortly after 6pm and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

PSNI Inspector Sayers said: "Police would like to thank the local community for their patience and support while police worked to make the area safe.

"Police are appealing for anyone who has any information that can assist with their investigation to contact officers in Tennent Street Police Station on 101 quoting reference 525 06/05/19 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
