Peacock helps Giants strut into second place

Dundee Stars 1, Giants 3

Craig Peacock (pictured) fired the first Elite League hat-trick as the Belfast Giants moved into second place in what is becoming tense title race.

When the Cardiff Devils being hammered 5-2 by a relentless Sheffield Steelers, the Giants beat the Dundee Stars 3-1 to make it eight league wins in a row to jump above the Welsh side in the table.

Sheffield still hold a seven-point advantage, but the Giants have a match in hand and the two meetings between the teams early next month — which were already set to be big games — are now going to be massive.

Peacock’s treble takes his tally to 20 goals for the season and only Brett Hemingway has scored more.

The Englishman’s first of the night arrived with eight minutes gone, firing the puck past Dundee goaltender Ladislav Kudrna after good work from Jeff Mason and Simon Lambert.

The Giants conceded a penalty shot midway through the second period, which allowed the Stars to level. Brent Hughes skated forward one-on-one with Stephen Murphy and the Dundee man came out on top of that individual battle.

Lambert then played a part in Peacock’s second goal as the Giants regained the lead with four minutes of the second period to go.

This time Colin Shields was also involved as Peacock doubled his — and the Giants’ — tally.

With just one goal between the sides the Giants needed another goal to wrap up the victory.

It wasn’t until Kudrna was pulled and Peacock struck again with just seven seconds to go that the two points were guaranteed to be going back to Belfast.
