Pensioner conned by bogus workman

A 93-year-old woman has been duped by a fraudster who made her pay for work he did not do.

Police in Co Down have released a computer-generated image of a man suspected of conning the Hillsborough woman.

The incident unfolded at the woman's home in the Carnreagh area of the village when a man called at her door and told her she owed him money for work carried out on her roof.

She handed over the money.

Police said the woman had not requested any work and there was no evidence any had been done.

The encounter happened on September 1 but full details were released by police on Wednesday.

The same man called back at the house three days later and asked for a substantially larger sum for other work, police said. When she told him she did not have the money, he allegedly told her to get it and he would call back.

On September 6 it was reported that an unknown male had been banging on the windows of the same house during the night.

The man who called at the pensioner's door is described as being around 50 years old, 5ft 10in, well built and had a Northern Ireland accent.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0845 600 8000.
