It happened in the South Promenade area of the Co Down town.

A 78-year-old man has died in a road traffic accident in Newcastle, Co Down.

Geoffrey Cartwright, who was from the local area, was knocked down as he walked along South Promenade shortly before 11pm on Thursday night.

Police arrested an 18-year-old male on suspicion of driving while unfit and dangerous driving causing death.

He has been released on bail.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision has been asked to contact police by calling 101, quoting reference 1530 of 24/08/17.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Willie Clarke, said he was heartbroken by Mr Cartwright's death.

"The local community has been left in shock by this news. Geoff was a gentleman, who was liked by everyone.

"I have known him all my life and it is truly heartbreaking to comprehend this news," he said.
