Pensioner Jim Maxwell killed in west Belfast collision while out walking his dog

A 71-year-old pedestrian has been killed in a collision on the Donegall Road in west Belfast

Jim Maxwell was said to have been walking his dog at the time of incident when he was struck at about 7.20pm on Wednesday.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police can confirm that the male pedestrian who died following a one-vehicle road traffic collision on the Donegall Road in Belfast last night was 71-year-old Jim Maxwell from the west Belfast area."

West Belfast Sinn Fein MP Paul Maskey said the victim was well-known locally.

"My thoughts go to this gentleman's family," he said.

"There's no good time of the year for anyone to be knocked down, but especially this time of year just adds that extra bit of sadness."

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.

The Donegall Road was later reopened.

Earlier on Wednesday, another pedestrian died after he was struck by a lorry in County Down.
