Pensioner ordered to payback more than £10,000 fraudulent dole payments

A Co Tyrone pensioner has been ordered to hand back more than £10,000 in dole payments obtained fraudulently, after it was discovered he was also in receipt of a pension.

The Department for Communities' Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order against 65-year-old Brian McCormick, of Urbal Lane in the village of Coagh.

He had been in receipt of Jobseekers' Allowance on the basis he was unemployed and had no other source of income.

He was found guilty of two charges of dishonesty on December 21, 2017.

At the confiscation hearing on Thursday the Londonderry Crown Court granted a confiscation order for £10,661.17.

He is required to make the payment by March 6, 2019 or serve up to five years in prison for its non-payment - which will remain payable.

Confiscation Orders can be issued by the Crown Court, and serve the purpose of depriving defendants of the benefits of their crimes.
