Personal Stories: Emma sets a high blog standard for herself

By Staff Reporter

Emma Horner from south Belfast has been shortlisted for an award at the Mad Blog Awards For Mums And Dads.

The 43-year-old has built up quite a following for her Adventures Of An Unfit Mother blog since she started it in 2011 after embarking on a personal fitness course.

Emma said: "I write about everything. I try to be completely honest about the ups and downs of being home with children – Anna (15), Jude (13), Cormac (10), Rory (8) and Luke (4).

"You walk a fine line with privacy. I obviously want to guard my family's privacy but also open up and be honest.

"When I am honest it becomes funny and people connect with it.

"There are times it's funny, honest, open and sometimes I get a bit brave and think I shouldn't have posted that but most of the time I am comfortable.

"On other occasions I will write a book review, my feelings about my son starting school, the identity of being at home and how people respond to that and there is Shoe Of The Week because I have a bit of shoe fetish."

Emma finds out on September 19 if she has won the family category of the MAD awards she previously won in 2012 and 2013.

"Other people nominated me which is great," she said.

Emma is currently at the John Hewitt Summer School after securing a full bursary and hopes to write a fiction novel in the future.
