Peter Chambers rows in with Freedom of the Borough

By Staff Reporter

Olympic medal rower Peter Chambers has been given the Freedom of the Borough at an event in his home town of Coleraine.

Peter's fellow rowers - brother Richard and Alan Campbell - received the same recognition earlier this month, the highest honour that can be bestowed by the council. Peter was unable to attend the earlier event, but yesterday signed the Freedom Register as family and friends looked on at Coleraine Town Hall.

All three rowers won medals at the London 2012 Games.

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Mayor Joan Baird said: "I was delighted to welcome Peter to Coleraine Town Hall to mark this very special occasion. Our three Freemen are true ambassadors for the Causeway Coast and Glens and it is an honour that they are the first recipients of this accolade, which is the highest honour a council can bestow."
