Stephen Wilson from Banbridge, who set up the petition, wrote: "Mairtin O Muilleoir in retweeting the disgusting video originally posted by Barry McElduff endorsed the message of hatred, disrespect and lack of compassion towards the families of the Kingsmill killings.
"Furthermore O Muilleoir demonstrated his unsuitability to hold the position of an MLA in Northern Ireland. We now call on O Muilleoir to resign his seat immediately."
In a poll carried out by Belfast Telegraph online about what Mr O Muilleoir should do in the wake of his retweet, the public appeared split. Of the 16,600 people who cast their votes by last night, 46% said it was time he quit while 45% said he should "do nothing".
Pressure has been mounting on the former minister since Mr McElduff resigned as MP for West Tyrone on Monday.
