This is the moment a man armed with a knife entered a shop in Londonderry on Sunday afternoon.

Two men made off empty handed after attempting to rob a shop on Westland Street at approximately 5:45pm.

CCTV footage shows one of the men, wearing a black jacket with the hood pulled up and of a slim build, with a scarf covering the lower half of his face, entering the shop.

The second suspect is wearing a purple-coloured tracksuit top that was pulled up over his face.

The man armed with a knife is reported to have used it to damage the shop till and a screen covering a food counter. Both suspects left the shop on foot, empty handed.

Detective Sergeant Richard Donnell confirmed that nobody was injured in the incident but said it must have been a "distressing ordeal" for staff.

"I am appealing who was in the area around this time yesterday and saw what happened, or anyone who knows anything about the incident to contact detectives in Strand Road on 101, quoting reference number 1055 of 12/05/19," he said.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
