Pipe bands line up as new season begins

The pipe band season kicked off at the weekend with the first championship of 2017.

Castle Grounds Bangor was the venue for the Ards and North Down Pipe Band Championships on Saturday.

Chieftain of the gathering, Ards and North Down mayor Deborah Girvan, took the salute and presided over proceedings as the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band showed off their excellence yet again with more awards.

The Lisburn-based ensemble were Grade 1 winners, outpacing Scotland's Vale of Atholl Pipe Band, who were the runners-up.

The other winners included: Grade 2 - Manorcunningham. Grade 3a - New Ross & District. Grade 3b - Battlehill. Grade 4a - St Mary's Derrytrasna. Grade 4b - Gransha.

The drum major winners were: Adult grade - Lauren Hanna (Lomond & Clyde Pipe Band, Scotland). Juvenile grade - Emma Barr (Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band). Junior grade - Jamie Cupples (Aughintober Pipe Band). Novice - Louise Smiton (Closkelt Pipe Band).
