Pipe bomb attackers target officers
A failed pipe bomb attack on police officers in Londonderry could have been potentially fatal, a senior commander has said.
The viable device was thrown at a PSNI patrol car in Charlotte Street in the Bogside area of the city last night. It missed the vehicle and did not detonate.
Dissident republicans have been blamed for the attack. The two officers inside the targeted car were back on duty today.
Area Commander Chief Inspector Jon Burrows condemned those responsible. "This was a viable device capable of causing death or serious injury," he said.
"Four families were put out of their homes last night, and we also had disruption to a local school, nursery and a mass service.
"While the investigation is at an early stage I would not be surprised to find that dissident republican elements were behind this attack.
"The officers in question are back on duty today and out serving the public and we will be offering them any support they require."
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
