Plastic bag tax creates new jobs

Environment Minister Alex Attwood has announced 10 new civil service jobs to administer the introduction of a plastic bag tax across Northern Ireland from April 2013.

The new jobs will be based in Londonderry.

Derry City SDLP councillor Martin Reilly has welcomed the announcement.

Cllr Reilly, who brought forward a motion to Derry City Council in 2005 calling for the introduction of the plastic bag tax, said:

“I am delighted that the Environment Minister Alex Attwood has resisted attempts to subcontract these jobs into the private sector.

“As well as the environmental and behavioural effects there is the added benefit of 10 new administrative jobs for Derry associated with the levy.

“The plastic bag tax has proved to be a very successful measure in the South and more recently in Wales and there is every reason to believe that those positive effects will be repeated here in Derry and throughout the North.”
