Playgroup sit-in reaches fourth day

By Greg Harkin

A playgroup is into its fourth day of a sit-in at a community centre over an eviction notice.

Parents and staff at the Quigleys Point Childcare Centre in Co Donegal have been inside the local community centre since last Friday.

The group has been providing pre-school care in the area since 1984 and cares for 40 children.

The committee which runs the centre has asked the organisation to leave the premises as it plans to set up its own playgroup on the site.

Childcare Centre chair, Nancy McCauley, said locks to the premises had been changed when they tried to enter last Friday.

“We have always been mindful of the welfare of all the children in the community and the community at large, but we were faced with no alternative but to take the action that we have now taken,” she said.
