Police appeal for witnesses after fatal crash on A1

The man who died in a car crash on the A1 Hillsborough Road on Thursday was named by police last night as Robert Ferrin from the Belfast area.

Mr Ferrin (61) was behind the wheel of a metallic grey Ford Focus that was involved in the single vehicle collision on the northbound carriageway of the main Belfast-Dublin road at around 5.40pm on Thursday.

Mr Ferrin was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment following the accident, but later died from the injuries he sustained.

PSNI Inspector David McClements issued an appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision - or anyone who witnessed the Ford Focus car travelling on the north-bound carriageway close to the Hillsborough flyover prior to the collision - to contact officers on the non-emergency 101 number.

Mr Ferrin's death brings to 28 the number of people who have lost their lives on Northern Ireland's roads in 2017 - the same as the number or road users who had died at the same point last year.
