A woman in her 30s has been arrested following the sudden death of a man in Magherafelt.

The 46-year-old's body was found in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Detective Inspector Will Tate said: "A post-mortem will take place in due course to determine the cause of death. We are treating this as suspicious at this stage.

"A 32-year-old female has been arrested and is helping the police with their enquiries. There are no further details at this time."

Forensics officers remained at the scene of the death in the Sperrin View area of the town for several hours yesterday.

SDLP Mid-Ulster MLA Patsy McGlone said: "This is a tragic death, and I would like to offer my sympathies to the family and friends."

DUP Mid-Ulster MLA Keith Buchanan added: "I'm sad to hear the news and my thoughts are with the family at this time, especially so close to Christmas."

"The Sperrin View area is only a small cul-de-sac. I'm sure the neighbours are absolutely stunned at the news.

"Everyone will have their own slant on what happened, but it's still a tragedy," he said.

Ulster Unionist councillor George Shiels said: "It's very shocking certainly. Everyone's very annoyed that something like this has happened."

Paul McLean, a DUP councillor for Magherafelt, added: "No matter what the circumstances, it's another family and home plunged into sorrow just coming up to Christmas."
