Police car 'hit 105mph to catch up with speeder'

By Nevin Farrell

A motorist with four passengers in his car, which sped past police at over 100mph, has been fined and given penalty points.

Colm Logue (20), an electrician of Brookview Glen, Eglinton, appeared at Antrim Magistrates' Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to contravening a 70mph speed limit.

A prosecutor said that at 4.10pm on June 4 this year police were travelling in wet conditions on the M2 motorway when they were passed by a Volkswagen Passat travelling at speed. They tried to pursue the vehicle and at one stage they matched the speed, clocking the car at 105mph. The prosecutor said police were unable to keep up because of the conditions but later they did pull Logue over when he became caught up in traffic.

A defence lawyer said his client didn't realise just how fast he was driving, and believed he was still in control of the vehicle.

District Judge Oonagh Mullan said she was giving Logue "a last chance" and imposed three penalty points and a £250 fine.
