Police chase driver caged

By Ashleigh McDonald

A car thief with 162 criminal convictions who was pursued by police through a built-up area of Belfast has been jailed and banned from driving for four years.

Simon McCarey (37) – whose convictions include 52 for road traffic offences – complained that he was "always hammered" when he came before the court after he was jailed for 12 months.

Belfast Crown Court Judge Corinne Philpott QC ordered that McCarey, whose address was given as HMP Maghaberry, serve half his sentence in custody with the remaining six months on licence.

McCarry pleaded guilty to burglary, car theft, dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol and driving with no insurance.

When the offences were committed, McCarry was on bail awaiting sentence on a robbery charge.
