Police disperse up to 40 after weekend disorder

A major brawl broke out involving up to 40 people in a Co Londonderry town in the early hours at the weekend.

The police are appealing for information following a disturbance in the Queen Street area of Magherafelt in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Shortly before 2am police received a report of a brawl and three men in their 20s were arrested. A 23-year-old male was also cautioned.

A 22-year-old man was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service, while a 20-year-old and 24-year-old were released pending further enquiries.

Magherafelt UUP councillor George Shiels said it was disappointing that disturbances often happen after “Black Friday”.

“There is far too much of this type of activity going on and I am glad the police were on top of it,” he said. “Someone could be killed during this type of fracas.”

Police at Magherafelt can be contacted on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
