Police have explained the reason behind this week's need to slow traffic on the main Dublin to Belfast route for an ambulance transport.

On Wednesday police issued an appeal for motorists on the A1 and M1 to be patient as a slow-moving ambulance was transporting a patient.

Taking to Facebook, officers explained how it was for a 15-year-old girl who had spinal surgery in Turkey and was making her way home to Glengormley via Dublin.

Said police: "Mia is on a long road to recovery and she wished to pass on her thanks to everyone for their patience and consideration during her transport home.

"Roads Policing would like to thank motorists for their patience on the A1 and M1 motorway on Wednesday evening. We would also like to thank our colleagues in An Garda Siochana for escorting Mia from Dublin airport to Northern Ireland and Glengormley ambulance crew for bringing her home."
