Police hold man after car smash

A man was led away in handcuffs after pedestrians narrowly escaped injury in a daylight road drama yesterday.

Witnesses said a speeding car mounted the footpath and crashed into a lamppost in a busy shopping area on the Antrim Road in north Belfast.

It is believed two young men who were being driven in the car made off towards the Waterworks park.

One woman at the scene said: "It's very lucky no-one was killed or injured.

"This is a busy, bustling area on Sundays and lots of people were out shopping, going about their business."

The accident, near the junction of the Limestone Road, occurred just yards from Antrim Road police station.
