Police hunt armed man after cash is stolen in Newry

A man armed with a gun threatened members of staff during a robbery.

Shortly after 5.30pm yesterday it was reported to police that a man carrying a suspected firearm had entered a business premises in the Old Dublin Road area of Newry.

The robber threatened workers inside before making off with a sum of cash.

Police said he was wearing a hat with a scarf covering his face and made off in a black Ford Mondeo in the direction of the border.

Inspector Denise Graham said: "I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident and saw anything to contact CID at Ardmore Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
