Police hunt Newtownards rapist

Police are hunting for a man in his 20s after an 18-year-old woman was raped at the weekend.

She was approached by a man in the Market Street area of Newtownards at around 12.30am on Sunday, with the attack taking place nearby a short time later.

Detectives from the PSNI Rape Crime Unit have said someone may have noticed either the victim — who has short, dyed red hair, was wearing a black top, black cardigan and shiny leggings — or her alleged attacker as there were a number of people socialising in the Market Street and Castle Street area at the time.

The attacker is described as being in his 20s, around 5ft 10in tall and thin. He was wearing dark jeans, had short, dark spiked hair, dark eyebrows and was clean-shaven with swarthy skin.

Strangford MLA Michelle McIlveen said: “It is vital that anyone who knows anything about this incident comes forward to the police. The perpetrator of this heinous predatory act is a danger to society and it is vitally important that he is apprehended.”

She urged people not to go out alone at night and to arrange transport if possible.

Anyone with information can contact the Rape Crime Unit on 9070 0305 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
